De Olifant cigar factory, Kampen - Holland

"Kampen Holland" appears on the beautiful cedar packaging produced by De Olifant cigar factory. With around 50,000 inhabitants, this small town is located right on the river IJssel near to the IJsselmeer. Kampen is an idyllic place with historic warehouses, facades, imposing churches, old sailing ships and numerous clay brick walls. These are all part of a beautiful legacy from the time when Kampen was an influential hanseatic town.

Johann Lehmkuhl who had come from Bremen saw great potential in Kampen for the cigar industry. In 1826, he provided the impetus in making Kampen a cigar city. It proved to be a success. At the end of the 19th century, 40% of Kampen's working population was employed in the cigar industry. Small and large factories were established. The Voorstraat is the "birthplace" of many a famous cigar brand, including De Olifant.
